The iconic Al Janoub Stadium has received Gold Level Certification from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for its operational performance, awarded by the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), making it the first stadium of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ™ to receive all three GSAS certifications. Previously, the stadium received certifications for sustainable design and green building practices.
To celebrate the achievement, representatives of the Supreme Delivery and Legacy Committee (SC), FIFA, GORD and Mosanada Facilities Management Services were invited to attend an awards ceremony.
During the ceremony, ing. Ghanim Al Kuwari, Deputy General Manager of Technical Services at SC, said: “As we reach new heights of sustainability in stadium design and construction, we are also developing the skills, capabilities, processes and resources in the facilities management industry and construction operations in Qatar to ensure our sites are as sustainable as possible We conduct in-depth training sessions throughout the certification process to ensure we achieve the best possible outcome for the building and for our team that works there and manages the site. continuously.”
English Bodour Al Meer, Director of Sustainability at SC, said: “This certification is testament to our efforts to deliver on the commitments of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Sustainability Strategy. We are proud to be the first country to host the FIFA World Cup FIFA that conducts these detailed assessments of our stadium operations.
The operations certification system serves as a follow-up to the assessments carried out in the design and construction phases. Assesses the stadium’s actual energy and water consumption, waste management practices, indoor air quality, building user satisfaction, and facilities management practices.
The Doctor. Yousef Alhorr, Founding President of GORD, said: “Al Janoub Stadium is the first project in history to achieve all three certifications with such high ratings: a four-star certification for design and construction, an A* for construction management, and now a gold standard for operations The project underwent due diligence from preparation and design through to the construction and post-occupancy phase This would not have been possible without the great interest and commitment of SC and FIFA, who integrate sustainability into sport, raising awareness and GORD is proud to be a part of this flagship project. Together, we aim to build a community that champions sustainable practices in building operations and facilities management.”
Federico Addiechi, FIFA’s Director of Sustainability and Environment, said: “Achieving a green building certification for stadium operations was a voluntary action by Qatar, which we have accepted from the beginning. We believe that it is not just a great standard that will apply to all stadiums at Qatar 2022, but also to other stadiums at future FIFA World Cups.”
SC has already certified its venue, Al Bidda Tower, with GSAS Operations certifications, and is carrying out the same assessment for most FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ stadiums.
